The Johnny Cash Project: September 30, 2010

The Johnny Cash Project from Chris Milk on Vimeo.

Cultural collaboration takes many forms. Optimally, it takes forms that are free and unfettered by agenda, forms that are authentic and meaningful. Often it takes forms that embody music and art. The Johnny Cash Project is all of these: People around the world collaborating in a shared love for the music and meaning of Johnny Cash. Thanks to the Internet people from diverse cultures, countries, and values can convene around shared points of interest. In the above case, the music of Johnny Cash.

Watch the above video and think for a moment how the world has changed because of the Internet. Think about how you can connect with people you might never have met before. Think about how those connections can tie you viscerally to a subject that might transform your perspective of the world. And what it means to be a part of it.

THE JOHNNY CASH PROJECT IS A UNIQUE COMMUNAL WORK, A LIVING PORTRAIT OF THE MAN IN BLACK

Through this interactive website, participants may draw their own portrait of Johnny Cash to be integrated into a collective whole. As people all over the world contribute, the project will continue to evolve and grow, one frame at a time.

Submit your drawing to become a part of the new music video for the song “Ain’t No Grave”. Strung together and relayed in sequence your art, paired with Johnny’s haunting song, will become a living, moving, and ever changing portrait of the legendary Man in Black.
Yet another important project with the fingerprints of Google Creative and Aaron Koblin, the same people who did The Wilderness Downtown, which we blogged about earlier.
