This video trailer of the forthcoming virtual world Blue Mars by the company Avatar Reality looks spectacular. According to some notices I've seen, open beta will be coming soon. I'll be interested to see the extent to which organizations can create their own content. According to the Blue Mars dev group they accept three tiers of developers: "City Developers," "Block Developers" and "Content Creators." Still the graphics look stunning. Noticeably absent from the footage: people. (via NPIRL)
Hm, wow! I noticed three shots with people in them: what looked like an Albert Einstein mannequin or something standing on a balcony waving to the horizon (which looked nice, but I don't know if it was actually an avatar), a park flyover that showed one person-looking thing at the bottom for a second (too quick to tell anything about), and then the shot of what looked like the doors to a train station, with LOTS of people moving around in some kind of time-lapse shot. That last one looked like it was shot in some RL transit hub somewhere; if it was actually Blue Mars Avatars, I'd be fascinated.
I notice that their partners are going to "deliver" millions of users to them. How convenient! I hope they remember to put airholes in the shipping crates. :)
