"Holy Qu'ran" -- Photo credit: Kuwaiti Londoner.Gameindustry.biz is reporting that the European release of Little Big Planet, a game which was mentioned to us only two weeks ago as one of the only games that a game designer friend was looking forward to this season, is being delayed due to verses of the Qu'ran appearing in the music.
The publisher has told Eurogamer that this means every copy of the game currently with retail in the world will be recalled and replaced, and retailers have started notifying customers of the hold-up.
"During the review process prior to the release of LittleBigPlanet, it has been brought to our attention that one of the background music tracks licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Qur'an," Sony said in a short statement.
The passages of interest are:
1- In the 18th second: "كل نفس ذائقة الموت" ("kollo nafsin tha'iqatol mawt", literally: 'Every soul shall have the taste of death').
2- Almost immediately after, in the 27th second: "كل من عليها فان" ("kollo man alaiha fan", literally: 'All that is on earth will perish').
The offending verses appear, "in the first 30 seconds of the background music to the Swinging Safari level."
We're looking for comment from people in the Middle East/Arab gaming and virtual world industry ...
[UPDATE] GameIndustry.biz is reporting this morning that copies of the recalled game are selling on ebay for $249.
